The Hakushu 18 Year Old Peated Malt Japanese Single Malt Whisky is a limited House of Suntory bottling of peated malt that has rested at least eighteen years in selected casks at the Yamanashi forest distillery. The peat is why you get a slow wave of smoke; the granite-filtered mountain water and long rest are why that smoke stays herbal and peppery. Bottled at 96 proof (48% ABV). It is a cold-weather pour.
Sage, ripe green apple, and pineapple open, then herbal smoke, grapefruit, and acacia honey fill a rich sip. The texture is unctuous. The finish is clean smoke with fresh green citrus that lingers.
