Frequently asked
Limited Edition, answered
The questions shoppers search for most often about this category, answered plainly.
What does bottled in bond mean?
Bottled in bond is a legal designation for American whiskey and other distilled spirits. The spirit must come from one distiller at one distillery during one distilling season, age for at least four years in a federally bonded warehouse, and be bottled at exactly 100 proof. Water is the only permitted addition. These requirements make the label more specific than general terms such as small batch or limited release.
What does single barrel mean for bourbon?
Single barrel bourbon comes from one individual aging barrel rather than a blend of several barrels. Because warehouse location and differences in the wood can affect maturation, the flavor may vary from one barrel to another. That individuality is the main appeal when browsing limited-edition whiskey. Small batch bourbon, by contrast, combines selected barrels to create a more consistent profile across bottles.
What is cask strength?
Cask strength means a spirit is bottled at the strength at which it is drawn from the cask, without water added to dilute it. The term is also commonly expressed as barrel proof or barrel strength. These bottlings retain the spirit’s natural intensity from the barrel. They can be tasted at full strength or adjusted with a small amount of water to change how their aromas and flavors present themselves.
What is small batch bourbon?
Small batch bourbon is made by blending a selected group of barrels to create a balanced, repeatable flavor profile. The phrase has no regulated definition, so the number of barrels used varies by producer. It differs from single barrel bourbon, which comes from only one cask and can show more variation between releases. Look beyond the phrase itself and consider the producer’s stated batch details when comparing bottles.
Is Four Roses Single Barrel good?
Yes, it can be a good choice if you enjoy a balanced bourbon with sweetness and spice. Four Roses Single Barrel is bottled at 100 proof and commonly shows notes of pear, vanilla, caramel, ripe plum, cherries, brown sugar, and rye spice. Because each bottling comes from an individual barrel, some variation is expected. Choose it for a pronounced yet elegant profile rather than complete consistency from bottle to bottle.
