The Hakushu Japanese Single Malt Whisky is Suntory's 12-year-old single malt from the forest distillery beneath Mt. Kaikomagatake in Yamanashi. Non-peated malt from American oak and Spanish oak is married with a lightly peated American-oak malt, which is why green herbs and orchard fruit sit over a mild thread of smoke. Bottled at 86 proof (43% ABV) and allocated. It is a weeknight pour.
Green apple and basil lead a bright sip, with pine needle and mint right behind. Sweet pear and kiwi stand out on the palate; the mouthfeel stays clean and lifted. Green tea and a thin thread of smoke hang on a finish that never turns heavy.
