Frequently asked

Sparkling Wine, answered

The questions shoppers search for most often about this category, answered plainly.

What is Champagne?

Champagne is a sparkling wine produced in the Champagne region of France under the region’s appellation rules. Other bubbly wines belong to the broader sparkling wine category, but they are not Champagne when made elsewhere. The name therefore identifies both a style of wine and its specific French origin, rather than serving as a general term for every sparkling bottle.

Is Prosecco a Champagne?

No, Prosecco is not Champagne. Both are sparkling wines, but Prosecco comes from Italy’s Veneto and Friuli regions and is made mainly from Glera grapes. Its second fermentation generally takes place in a large tank. Champagne comes only from France’s Champagne region and mainly uses Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier, with the second fermentation occurring in the bottle.

Does Champagne expire?

Yes, Champagne can expire or decline in quality over time. Properly stored, unopened non-vintage bottles generally remain fresh for three to four years, while vintage bottles may last five to ten years or longer. Once opened, Champagne typically lasts one to three days, or up to three to five days when tightly sealed with a Champagne stopper and refrigerated. Flat bubbles, darkened color, or sour aromas indicate deterioration.

How do you open Champagne bottle?

Chill the Champagne bottle thoroughly, do not shake it, and remove the foil. Keep your thumb firmly over the cork and cage while loosening the wire. Hold the bottle at a 45-degree angle, pointed away from people. Grip the cork and slowly twist the base of the bottle rather than the cork, easing it out gently until it releases with a quiet hiss.

What does Champagne taste like?

Champagne typically tastes crisp and lively, with fine bubbles, bright acidity, and flavors such as lemon, green apple, peach, or pear. Yeast aging can add creamy texture and notes of toast, brioche, almond, or hazelnut. The exact profile varies by bottle and sweetness level, ranging from very dry to noticeably sweet, while citrus, apple, and subtle pastry notes are common.
