John Walker & Sons Private Collection 2014 is Jim Beveridge’s first Private Collection flavour study: twenty-nine casks in 8,888 numbered decanters, built from smoky Island malts, Highland whisky from Diageo’s long-running Calculus wood trial, and grain aged in refill and European oak. Islay peat, maritime Island smoke, and sweeter Highland smoke are the point, bottled at 93.6 proof. A long, smoky nightcap.
Peat and campfire smoke open over vanilla, molasses, orange oil, and blackberry. The sip is oily: figs, ginger, clove, nuts, and honeyed grain wrapped around the smoke. The finish is long and elegant — oak, cigar, red apple, and a last thread of salt.
