Lalocura Tobasiche Mezcal
Bottled at 96.8 proof (48.4% ABV), this is mezcal with real weight to it, though nothing about it feels heavy. Lemon curd and honey come through bright and sweet up front, with soft berry fruit sitting just behind them. Underneath, there's the dry mineral edge that comes with pit-roasted agave: ash, a touch of baking clay, and a slow lift of black pepper on the finish.
Tobasiche agave grows tall and slim and takes its time, and it gives this mezcal a leaner, more savory shape than espadín. It comes from Santa Catarina Minas in Oaxaca, the village known for distilling in clay pots rather than copper, which is part of why the texture reads so soft against the pepper.
Additive free, in a 750 mL bottle. Drink it neat at room temperature, in small pours, the way it's taken in Oaxaca.
