Pour this one neat and it comes at you dark and dry: burnt toast and charcoal up front, with peat smoke and black pepper trailing behind. Dark chocolate softens the edges, and a thread of anise keeps the finish long and slightly bitter in the way good Islay whisky should be. At 92 proof (46% ABV) it drinks comfortably without needing much help.
Ardbeg makes its whisky on Islay, the island off Scotland's west coast where peat smoke defines the local style. This Committee Release from 2022 spent its maturation in ex-bourbon oak casks, which keeps the whisky lean and lets the smoke do the talking rather than burying it under sweetness.
It works well as a straightforward after-dinner dram, and it stands up in a smoky highball if that is more your speed. The 750 mL bottle is an easy everyday choice for anyone who already knows they like peat.
