Ron Carúpano X.O. Venezuelan Rum
This is a rum built for slow sipping. It comes from the Macarapana Valley in Venezuela, where the tropical heat pushes maturation along faster than it would move in a cooler climate, and it rests in American white oak ex-bourbon casks that leave their mark in the color and the weight of it.
Candied fruit leads, sweet and a little sticky, with walnut sitting just underneath. Cacao gives the palate a dry, faintly bitter edge that keeps the sweetness honest, and vanilla rounds everything off. The finish turns drier still, with tobacco and polished oak lingering after the fruit has faded.
At 80 proof (40% ABV) it drinks easily neat, though it holds up well over a single large cube if you prefer it colder. A 750 mL bottle for the shelf you reach for on a good evening rather than a special occasion.
