This is a big bourbon that stays easy to follow. Ten years in the barrel came first, then a second maturation in toasted French oak, and the result is dark fruit set against dry, nutty wood. Blackberry leads, ripe and a little jammy, with caramel filling in behind it.
Bottled at cask strength, 130.2 proof, so expect real heat. Toasted almond runs underneath the sweetness and keeps it from turning syrupy, and black pepper shows up late alongside the oak. Vanilla threads through the whole thing rather than sitting in any one place.
Whiskey this strong takes a drop or two of dilution well, and a few minutes of rest opens the fruit considerably. It also stands up in an Old Fashioned without disappearing under sugar and bitters. Kentucky straight bourbon, distilled in Indiana, in a 750 mL bottle.
