Maple leads, thick and sweet, with vanilla sitting just behind it. Honey rounds out the front of the palate, and caramel carries through until baking spice and toasted oak dry things out at the end. It drinks easily for a whiskey with this much sugar to it, more warm than sharp.
This is a single barrel bourbon from Vermont, matured over four years in new charred American oak. Because each barrel is bottled on its own, one bottle will lean a little sweeter or a little spicier than the next, which is part of the appeal.
At 100.1 proof, there's real weight here without any burn that needs taming. It holds up in an old fashioned, where the maple and caramel do most of the work for you, and it's just as good neat after dinner. The 750 mL bottle is an easy one to keep within reach.
