Ardbeg Anthology The Harpy’s Tale 13 Year Old Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky
Thirteen years on Islay, bottled at 92 proof (46% ABV). That strength suits this whisky well: enough weight to carry the smoke without blunting the brighter edges underneath.
Peat smoke leads, as it should, but it shares the room. Lemon cuts through the ash early on, and honey follows close behind with a soft vanilla sweetness. Underneath sits a tropical fruit character and a rich, sweet-wine lift, the mark of time spent in Sauternes casks alongside ex-bourbon barrels. The two maturations pull in different directions and the whisky is better for it, coastal and sweet at once.
It drinks well neat, though a single drop opens the fruit considerably. A 750 mL bottle of something worth keeping within reach rather than saving for a date on the calendar.
