Islay makes whisky that tastes like where it comes from, and this Ardbeg is no exception. Ex-bourbon oak has softened the edges without sanding down the smoke, leaving a 2023 release that drinks dark and mineral. Tar and peat smoke sit at the base of everything, with dark chocolate folded through the weight of it.
Menthol and eucalyptus cut across that heaviness and open the whole thing up, cool and green against the char. Underneath, a savory streak of smoked artichoke keeps it from turning sweet. At 92 proof (46% ABV), the texture stays oily and full rather than sharp, so the smoke lingers well past the swallow.
This is a Committee bottling of Islay single malt, in a 750 mL bottle, and it holds up as well on a cold evening as it does after dinner. A few drops of water will lift the menthol further if you want more of it.
