Ardbeg Spectacular Port Cask Matured Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky
Ardbeg builds this Islay single malt on two kinds of cask: Port wine and ex-bourbon. The result keeps the distillery's smoke intact while giving it something darker and fruitier to lean on.
Peat smoke is the first thing you notice, thick and familiar. Underneath it sit plum and berry fruit, sweet enough to soften the edges without turning the whisky into dessert. Dark chocolate runs through the palate, and leather and spice hold on at the end, dry and a little warm. At 92 proof (46% ABV) the texture is full but not heavy, so the smoke reads as flavor rather than force.
This is the 2024 release, in a 750 mL bottle. It works neat if you like smoke straight on, and a single cube opens up the fruit if you want more of it. A sensible pour for a weeknight rather than a bottle you save for an occasion.
