Balcones “1” Texas Single Malt Whisky is the flagship from Balcones Distilling in Waco, bottled at 106 proof. It is 100% malted Golden Promise barley, fermented long and double-distilled in copper pot stills, then aged in Texas for at least 4 years in new oak with custom toast and char. That virgin oak is the flavor: toffee, chocolate, and toasted bread come forward on the barley, and the pot stills leave the whisky viscous instead of thin.
Whisky Advocate found buttered toast, biscuity malt, caramel, chocolate, and toasted nuts, with a finish of dark spice and anise. Distiller adds dried fruit, golden fruit, cashew, and a deep malty close. The mouthfeel stays buttery, and oak tannin dries the finish.
