Barrell Cask Finish Series: Mizunara Bourbon Whiskey is the third limited release in this series, about 15,000 bottles, launched in April 2024 and bottled at 116.42 proof. Indiana bourbon aged 6, 7, and 9 years, Kentucky aged 8 years, and Tennessee aged 8 and 14 years make the blend, a derived mashbill of 76% corn, 20% rye, and 4% malted barley. Those whiskeys spent a year and a half in first-use toasted Japanese Mizunara, then were blended after the finish. The oak is porous and gentle on tannin, so sandalwood, herbal spice, and coconut sit on the bourbon instead of covering it.
It is viscous and creamy. Fresh strawberry, white peach, and honey meet coconut, sandalwood, and a milk-chocolate cherry, with toasted oak and a little leather underneath. Distiller called it heavy and rich, the baking spice staying on. The finish swings toward butterscotch, warm caramel, ginger, and that sandalwood.
