Barrell Seagrass Rye Whiskey is Barrell Craft Spirits’ coastal rye, in the lineup since 2021. American and Canadian rye whiskeys are finished separately, then blended, so each cask does one job. Martinique rhum agricole brings grassy, floral cane. Malmsey Madeira candies the fruit and adds an oxidized, nutty edge. Apricot brandy casks put ripe stone fruit in the center. Fred Minnick ranked the 2021 whiskey No. 2 among American whiskeys that year. Each blend is bottled at cask strength, and the proof moves.
It is juicy and a little unctuous, with sandy tannin. Honeydew, ripe apricot, pear, lychee, and white grapefruit lead, then cinnamon, rosemary, fennel seed, and rosehip. Breaking Bourbon found a candy-shop nose cut by rye spice, and a creamy palate of red fruit, vanilla molasses, and apricot. The finish dries, spicy and long.
