Basil Hayden Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey 80 Proof is the bottle Booker Noe put in Beam’s Small Batch collection in 1992, built on a high-rye mash of 63% corn, 27% rye, and 10% malted barley, the same recipe family as Old Grand-Dad. At 80 proof that rye comes through as black pepper and brown sugar, dry and easy to sip. The 8-year age statement left the label in 2014; today’s bottle from James B. Beam Distilling Co. in Clermont is artfully aged, with no age stated.
Charred oak and vanilla caramel lead, with sweet brown sugar and black pepper behind them. Dried fruit rounds the middle. The mouthfeel is light, and the finish lingers on charred oak and that same dried fruit.
