BLACKENED x Rabbit Hole Masters of Whiskey Series Calvados Cask Finished Straight Bourbon Whiskey
BLACKENED and Rabbit Hole put their names together on this Kentucky straight bourbon, finished in Calvados casks and bottled at cask strength. The apple influence is easy to spot: apple butter up front, thick and cooked-down rather than fresh, with pear sitting just behind it and a tart snap of rhubarb keeping things from going soft.
Underneath, the bourbon side holds its own. Cinnamon runs warm through the palate, graham cracker gives it a sweet, biscuity weight, and black walnut brings a dry bitterness to the close that balances the honey. At 106.59 proof (53.3% ABV) it drinks full without turning hot, and a small splash opens up the orchard fruit noticeably.
This is the 2023 release, in a 750 mL bottle. Good on its own after dinner, and sturdy enough to stand up in an old fashioned if you want the apple and cinnamon to come through.
