Blackwood Toasted Rye Whiskey is Indiana rye whiskey aged 7 years, then put through the same second maturation as Blackwood’s bourbon. Each barrel goes into one of three new Kelvin barrels: a medium toast with no char, a char 4 barrel with toasted heads, or a char 2 barrel with toasted heads, so caramelized wood sugar softens the rye without burying the spice. The distiller is not named. It is bottled at 105 proof.
Mint, pepper, and baking spice come through first, with the herbal, dill-edged rye The Daily Pour kept finding under the sweetness. Marshmallow and butterscotch from the toast sit against that spice. The finish is long and still spicy, creamy at the edges, with clove, cinnamon, and a last bit of marshmallow.
