Compass Box The Menagerie Blended Malt Scotch Whisky is James Saxon’s January 2021 limited blended malt, 7,741 bottles at 92 proof. He went looking for malts with an animalic, meaty note under the fruit: lead Mortlach from re-charred barrels, Deanston, Glen Elgin, a small Laphroaig dose for tar, and Compass Box’s Highland malt blend in toasted French oak. The parcels sit around 11 to 20 years. Mortlach’s meaty distillate is the reason this bottle tastes of leather and roast rather than of a fruit-forward core blend. Natural colour, not chill-filtered.
Baking spice, leather, tar, and musky fruit open the glass. Dried fruit, honey, and butterscotch sit on a lush, oily sip, with chile, ginger, clove, and baked orange. The finish is oily smoke and forest floor. Fruit is here. Leather, tar, and smoke keep it wild.
