Foursquare Penultimus 16 Year Old Single Blended Barbados Rum
Ten years in ex-bourbon barrels, then five more in ex-Moscatel casks: that split is what gives this St. Philip rum its shape. Barbados heat works quickly on a barrel, and fifteen years under it have pulled the spirit somewhere dense and dark without sanding off its edges.
Tropical fruit leads, bright and a little sweet, with caramel settling in behind it. Grape skin runs through the whole pour, tannic and faintly savory, and the finish turns toward black tea and spice. Dark chocolate sits underneath all of it. Bottled at cask strength, 114 proof (57% ABV), with no additives to soften the picture.
Nothing here needs help, though a few drops of water will open the fruit if you want it wider. A 750 mL bottle of single blended rum that drinks well on an ordinary evening and better on a good one.
