This is a Texas bourbon with a French accent. Four years in American oak build the caramel and vanilla core you expect from a Hill Country barrel, and four more in French Limousin oak pull the whiskey somewhere darker and drier. Eight years is a long time under a Texas sun, and the result drinks like it has earned its color.
Dark cherry sits right up front, deep and a little jammy, with cocoa underneath giving the whole thing a bittersweet edge. Toasted nuts and mature oak carry the back end without turning tannic or dusty. At 101 proof there is real weight here, enough to stand up in an Old Fashioned but plenty of nuance to drink neat.
