Highland Park Freya 15 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky is the third Valhalla Collection release, bottled in 2014 after fifteen years in first-fill American oak bourbon casks, at 102.4 proof, in the wooden longship frame. Bourbon wood turns the Orkney malt toward white chocolate, vanilla, and tropical fruit, with the house’s gentle peat still in the mix. About nineteen thousand bottles were filled. It is built for a cold-weather sip.
Almond and Madagascan vanilla open onto white chocolate, mango, melon, and candied cherry. The palate is smooth and lively: orange peel, butterscotch, lemongrass, passion fruit, and a clearer thread of peat than the nose suggests. Spice, toasted coconut, and light char linger on the finish.
