Ilegal Añejo Limited Edition Mezcal
A year in American and French oak sits behind this Oaxacan añejo, and it shows in the softness. Espadín agave, roasted underground the way mezcal has always been made, gives the smoke its shape here — sweet rather than sharp, more like coals cooling than a fire in full swing.
Vanilla and caramel come through the oak early, and dried fruit fills in behind them. Baking spice runs along the edges, warm and dry, keeping the sweetness from settling too heavily. At 80 proof (40% ABV) the texture stays easy, which makes this a mezcal you can drink neat without much ceremony.
It is additive free, so what you taste is the agave and the wood, nothing dressing it up. The 750 mL bottle earns a regular spot on the shelf rather than a special-occasion one, and it holds up well in a simple mezcal old fashioned if you would rather mix.
