Jack Daniel's 10 Year Old Tennessee Whiskey is a limited annual Aged Series release from Lynchburg: the mash of 80 percent corn, 12 percent malted barley, and 8 percent rye is mellowed drop by drop through 10 feet of sugar maple charcoal, then aged a decade in new charred American oak. Barrels start in the hotter upper ricks and are moved lower so the extra years read as fruit, molasses, and spice. Bottled at 97 proof. Keep it over a large cube.
Cooked apple and caramel meet dry fig on the nose. The sip is coated with molasses, chocolate, and butterscotch, then barrel spice and a little banana. The finish is long and warm, with sweet tobacco, oak, and cocoa still hanging on after the fruit fades.
