Jameson 12 Year Old Special Reserve Irish Whiskey is Midleton’s older blend: about three-quarters single pot still whiskey with grain, matured at least twelve years — some casks to seventeen — in ex-bourbon barrels and Oloroso sherry butts. The sherry share is the flavor engine: fruitcake, raisin, and nuttiness wrapped around pot-still spice, bottled at 80 proof. This is a weeknight pour that still feels dressed up.
Sherry richness, toasted fruit, and warm spice open the glass, then honey, caramel, and buttered nuts. Cocoa and dried fruit sit on a creamy, full palate; orange, oak, and a lasting spicy close follow. It drinks mellow and nutty-sweet, with enough sherry weight to sip neat.
