Kilkerran 12 Year Old Campbeltown Single Malt Scotch Whisky
Campbeltown sits on a narrow spit of Scotland's west coast, and its whiskies tend to carry a trace of the sea. Kilkerran 12 is a good example: bright citrus up front, then vanilla and honey filling in behind it, with a clean malt character running underneath the whole thing. A thread of brine and light peat smoke sits at the edges rather than taking over.
Twelve years is the youngest whisky in here, and maturation is split between bourbon and sherry casks, which accounts for the mix of sweetness and depth. At 92 proof (46% ABV) it has enough weight to drink neat without feeling hot, and it holds its shape if you prefer a splash of something cold.
This is an easy bottle to keep around. It works as a weeknight dram and it works when someone who does not usually drink Scotch asks what they should try. The 700 mL bottle is a sensible size for either.
