Laphroaig Càirdeas 2020 Port & Wine Casks Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky is the Friends of Laphroaig release for 2020: spirit from charred ex-bourbon barrels married with whisky from second-fill ruby Port barriques, then finished together in red-wine casks, bottled at 104 proof (52% ABV). The Port and wine wood is what you taste as strawberry, plum, and chocolate around the peat and iodine, with a rose-gold tint in the glass. This limited annual Càirdeas is built for cold weather.
Peat smoke, iodine, and sea salt meet strawberry jam, chocolate-covered cherry, and plum. The palate is creamy and tarry at once — caramel, brine, chile, and burning peat — with clove and cinnamon on the close. It drinks full, sweet, and medicinal, with wine fruit that never buries the smoke.
