Mars The Y.A. No. 1 Blended Malt Japanese Whisky
Mars built The Y.A. No. 1 as a blended malt, drawn together on Yakushima, the humid, forested island off Japan's southern coast. Tropical fruit leads — mango and ripe pineapple — and honey settles underneath it, thick enough to round out the 52% ABV. A thread of sea salt runs through the whole thing, the kind of savory edge that keeps sweet whisky from turning cloying.
Ex-bourbon casks do most of the work here, with a sherry component filling in the darker corners. Vanilla shows early and stays. The finish is warm rather than hot, with gentle spice and a whisper of smoke trailing off at the end.
This 2022 release comes in a 750 mL bottle at 104 proof. It has enough weight to drink neat after dinner, though a single cube opens the fruit considerably and takes nothing away from the salt.
