Mortlach Rare Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky
Dried fruit comes through first, dark and jammy, with vanilla sitting just behind it. Underneath there is dark chocolate and a savory, malty weight that keeps the whisky from turning sweet. Toasted oak and a light prickle of spice run through the finish.
This is Speyside single malt, drawn from a mix of first-fill and refill bourbon casks, charred hogsheads, and sherry-seasoned European oak. That combination explains the texture: rounder than a straight bourbon-cask malt, with more grip than a purely sweet one.
At 86.8 proof (43.4% ABV), it drinks comfortably neat without needing much coaxing, and it holds up in a highball if that is how your evening is going. A 750 mL bottle for regular pouring rather than saving for something.
