Old Elk Sour Mash Reserve Bourbon Whiskey is a limited 30-barrel small batch of the high-malt mash (51% corn, 34% malted barley, 15% rye), aged at least six years and bottled at 105 proof. Head distiller Kate Douglas changed the yeast strain, so fermentation drives the flavor and the glass opens floral and bright before the malt goes darker. This is a cold-weather pour.
Vanilla, caramel, and toffee fill a creamy sip, with dried fruit and maple behind them. Charred oak, coconut, and clove spice show as it sits. The finish is long and warming, malt-sweet with a little smoke at the edge.
