Orphan Barrel Muckety-Muck 24 Year Old Single Grain Scotch Whisky
Orchard fruit leads: crisp apple and soft pear, with caramel settling in behind them. Twenty-four years in oak have rounded everything off, and the whisky arrives sweet and gentle rather than heavy. Butterscotch coats the palate, and a twist of orange zest keeps the sweetness from turning cloying.
This is single grain whisky from the Lowlands, and it drinks the way good grain whisky should — silky, light on its feet, with vanilla running underneath. At 90 proof (45% ABV) it has enough weight to hold its shape neat, though it never turns hot. Polished oak shows up late, dry and clean, closing things out without tannic grip.
Grain whisky at this age is a different animal from malt: less about intensity, more about texture and patience. Pour it after dinner in a 750 mL bottle's worth of unhurried evenings, neat or over a single large cube.
