Orphan Barrel Scarlet Shade 14 Year Old Straight Rye Whiskey
Fourteen years in new charred American oak is a long stretch for rye, and this one wears the time well. Bottled at 90 proof (45% ABV), it drinks soft on entry, with vanilla buttercream and orchard fruit sitting together before the grain asserts itself. There is a warm, bakery quality to it — rye toast and baking spice, the kind of sweet-spiced character that comes from long barrel contact rather than heat.
Toasted oak runs underneath everything without turning dry or tannic. Orange marmalade brightens the back end, and a note of dark chocolate lingers after the fruit fades, giving the finish more weight than the proof would suggest.
Distilled and aged across Indiana and Kentucky, this is a rye with enough polish to sip neat and enough spine to stand up in an Old Fashioned. The 750 mL bottle is an easy one to keep open on the shelf rather than save for a special evening.
