Orphan Barrel Scarlet Shade 14 Year Old Straight Rye Whiskey is the brand's first rye: distilled in Indiana from a 95% rye mashbill, then aged fourteen years at Stitzel-Weller in Kentucky and bottled at 90 proof (45% ABV). Those humid Louisville summers on a high-rye mash are what you taste as vanilla buttercream, rye toast, and orange marmalade. It has the spine for a spirit-forward cocktail.
Vanilla buttercream and toasted grain open, then baking spice, rye toast, and orchard fruit fill a richer sip than 90 proof usually allows. Orange marmalade brightens the back of the palate, and dark chocolate lingers after the fruit fades. It drinks polished and rye-forward, sweet enough to sip neat and spicy enough to linger.
