Pinhook Vertical Series Bourbon War 6 Year Old Bourbon Whiskey is the third of nine annual releases from that 1,350-barrel MGP lot: 75% corn, 20.5% rye, and 4.5% malted barley, 120 barrels aged at Castle & Key, unfiltered at 107 proof (53.5% ABV). Six years in Kentucky is why brown sugar and toasted almond read as dessert, and the rye still cuts a clean spice line. Pour it over a large cube.
Brown sugar, licorice, and toasted almond open first, then black cherry and clove. Tahitian vanilla and caramel stand out on the palate; the mouthfeel is oily and coating, and the finish runs long on rye spice, sweet leather, and a slow heat.
