Rare Hare 1953 17 Year Old Cognac Cask Finished Bourbon Whiskey is the brand’s first whiskey: seventeen years of Kentucky straight bourbon, then twelve months in XXO Cognac casks from the Naud family’s Champagne-region reserve. Extra Extra Old grape spirit has already spent decades in French oak, so dried fruit and spice move into the whiskey as a second act rather than a correction. Named for the year Playboy was founded and limited to 1,953 bottles, it is bottled at 111 proof. Pour it as an after-dinner dram.
Dried fruit and caramelized nectarine lead, with clove, creamed corn, and a green herbal thread behind them. The sip is medium-bodied and dense for the proof — dark chocolate, tobacco, and baking spice — then caramel and nutmeg linger on a long, warm finish. Chocolate-covered raisin and cedar ride the last of the swallow.
