Smooth Ambler Old Scout 7 Year Old Straight Bourbon Whiskey is the West Virginia bottler's sourced high-rye bourbon: MGP 60% corn / 36% rye / 4% malted barley, aged 7 years, blended in small batches, non-chill filtered, and bottled at 99 proof (49.5% ABV). Seven years on that mashbill is why apple, leather, and cherry pipe tobacco show with the sweet spice. A straightforward neat pour.
Sweet spice and caramel open first, then red apple and vanilla. Leather, cherry pipe tobacco, and a thread of chocolate-earth stand out on the palate; the mouthfeel is creamy and easy at 99 proof, and the finish runs long on cinnamon, caramel, and tobacco.
