The Balvenie French Oak 16 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky is sixteen years in American oak, then a finish in French oak casks that held Pineau des Charentes — grape must fortified with Cognac eau-de-vie from the Charentes. That Pineau wood is what you taste as grapefruit, geranium, glazed fruit, and ginger on top of honey and vanilla. Bottled at 95.2 proof (47.6% ABV) and generally non-chill filtered, it has the weight to stay bright rather than heavy. Pour it over a large cube.
Lemon rind, grapefruit, and glazed fruit open with geranium and apple skin riding the sip. Root ginger and honey run through a light, lively palate. The finish is concise: ginger, honey, and a last twist of citrus.
