The Balvenie Stories 12 Year Old The Sweet Toast of American Oak Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky is twelve years in ex-bourbon casks, then a few months in virgin American oak from Kelvin Cooperage in Kentucky — slow-toasted about twenty minutes there and toasted again at The Balvenie cooperage. Malt Master Kelsey McKechnie wanted that deep toast for extra fudge, candied citrus, and vanilla on the honeyed malt. Bottled at 86 proof (43% ABV). It is a weeknight pour.
Sweet fudge and candied orange and lemon peel lead, then vanilla toffee, butterscotch, and blossom honey fill a creamy sip. Ginger, cinnamon, and melted brown sugar stand out toward the close. The finish is rich and malty, with vanilla and a gentle spice that lingers.
