The Balvenie The Edge of Burnhead Wood 19 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky
This is a bright Speyside malt with a warm undercurrent. Nineteen years in American oak ex-bourbon casks have softened it without dulling the fruit, and the result drinks lighter than its age might suggest. Lime and guava lead, sharp and tropical, before spiced honey settles in behind them.
The texture is generous rather than heavy. Baked orange gives the palate its sweetness, warmed through with vanilla from the wood, and a thread of white pepper and light smoke runs underneath to keep it from turning simple. At 97.4 proof, it holds together neat and needs very little help.
A 750 mL bottle of single malt that suits a quiet evening as easily as it suits company. If you like Speyside whisky with orchard and citrus character but want something with more weight and a little spice at the edges, this one earns its place on the shelf.
