The Balvenie The Week of Peat 14 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky
Smoke is present here, but it stays polite. Honey and citrus lead, warm and easy, with vanilla underneath and a soft floral malt character that keeps the whole thing bright. The peat comes in late, more woodsmoke than bonfire, carrying a little spice with it. Neat is the simplest way to drink it, though it takes an ice cube without falling apart.
This is Speyside whisky, made in a part of Scotland better known for orchard fruit and malt than for smoke. Fourteen years in American oak casks account for much of the sweetness, and the peat sits alongside that rather than over it. At 96.6 proof (48.3% ABV) there is a bit more weight than a standard bottling, which helps the smoke hold its shape.
A good everyday single malt for anyone curious about peat but not looking to be flattened by it. 750 mL.
