The Dalmore King Alexander III Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky
From the Highlands comes one of the most ambitious maturation regimes in single malt: six separate cask types, brought together in one bottle. Bourbon, Madeira, Marsala, Port, Cabernet Sauvignon and Oloroso sherry casks each contribute something, and the whisky that results is generous without being heavy.
Red berries lead, bright and juicy, with citrus cutting through behind them. Underneath sits a sweeter, darker seam of vanilla and caramel that turns toward coffee and chocolate as the whisky settles. Warming spice runs through the finish and lingers longer than the softness of the entry might suggest.
At 80 proof (40% ABV), it drinks easily neat and stays composed over ice, which makes it as suited to an ordinary evening as to a night that matters. The 750 mL bottle, with its stag's head emblem, is one of the more recognisable shapes on a back bar.
