The Yamazaki 12 Year Old 100th Anniversary Japanese Single Malt Whisky
Yamazaki's single malt is the reference point for Japanese whisky, and the 12 year old shows why. Peach and pineapple lead, bright and almost juicy, with grapefruit lifting the edges. Underneath sits vanilla and sweet coconut, and then the Mizunara makes itself known as a fine incense note laced with clove. It lingers longer than you expect from a whisky at 86 proof (43% ABV).
Twelve years across American oak, Spanish oak and Japanese Mizunara casks account for that range. The American oak brings the soft sweetness, the Spanish oak the depth, and the Mizunara its unmistakable sandalwood perfume, which is the note people remember weeks later.
Bottled at 750 mL to mark the distillery's 100th anniversary, this is a whisky worth keeping within reach rather than saving for a date on the calendar. Neat in a tulip glass is all it asks. A single large cube works well too, and the fruit holds up rather than fading.
