WhistlePig The Boss Hog VII Magellan’s Atlantic Straight Rye Whiskey is 17-year single-barrel rye after a short, intense double wood: about three weeks in new Spanish oak from Cantabria, then three days in fragrant Brazilian teak. The Spanish staves are tannic and leaky, toasted to throw cinnamon, allspice, and roasted nut; teak adds a sweet, toasted baking-spice lift. Bottled at barrel strength. Let it open in the glass.
Cinnamon sugar, allspice, and maple open, with vanilla and roasted almond behind them. Clove, brandied cherry, and dark chocolate stand out on the palate; the sip is syrupy and warm, and the finish lingers on cinnamon, sage, and toasted wood.
