Most Kentucky straight bourbon on the shelf is a good deal younger than this. Seventeen years in new charred American oak is a long stretch by any measure, and it shows up here as depth rather than heavy wood. Bottled at 86.8 proof, it drinks easily without the heat that can flatten a well-aged barrel.
Vanilla and caramel lead, soft and rounded, with honey filling in behind them. Underneath sits the part that only time gives you: tobacco leaf, worn leather, and mature oak that carries the finish long after the sweetness has faded. There is no rush to any of it.
Distilled in 2015, this is a 750 mL bottle of bourbon that asks nothing complicated of you. Neat is plenty, though it holds up fine over a single large cube if you prefer it cold.
