Most Kentucky straight bourbon goes into the barrel at a higher strength than this one. Here the spirit was entered at 100 proof, a lower barrel entry that changes what the new charred American oak can pull out of it over time. The result is a bourbon that tastes less like wood extract and more like sweet grain wearing spice.
Vanilla and dried apple lead, soft and orchard-bright rather than syrupy. Underneath sits a warm baking-spice thread of nutmeg and clove, with cocoa and coffee darkening things as the whiskey settles. Cherry and orange oil brighten the close, lifting the finish just when the roasted notes threaten to take over.
At 90.4 proof (45.2% ABV), it drinks easily neat and holds its shape over a single large cube without going thin. This is the 2022 release, bottled at 750 mL.
