This is bourbon with a sweet, dark edge to it. The 2023 cask strength release from Angel's Envy comes out of Kentucky and spends its final stretch in Portuguese Port wine casks, and that finish shows up as depth rather than decoration.
Dark cherry leads, thick and a little jammy, with caramel and vanilla settling in behind it. Baking spice keeps the sweetness in check, and the close is all toasted oak and a lingering Port sweetness that fades slowly. At 118.2 proof there is real weight here, undiluted from the barrel, so the texture coats more than it burns.
Poured neat it drinks warm and full; a few drops of dilution open the fruit further without flattening the spice. It also stands up well in a stirred cocktail, where the Port character holds its own against sweet vermouth. Presented in a 750 mL bottle.
