Barrell New Year 2023 Bourbon Whiskey is that year’s one-off toast from Barrell Craft Spirits, released in December 2022 and bottled at 113.54 proof. Straight bourbons aged 5, 6, 7, 8, and 10 years, distilled in Tennessee, Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, Wyoming, New York, Texas, and Maryland, were crafted in Kentucky and matured in new American white oak. A standard Barrell batch usually stays closer to three states. This annual pulls a much wider set of barrels into one bourbon, and Whisky Advocate scored it 92.
It drinks smooth, the oak sugar keeping the heat in check. Chocolate custard, vanilla frosting, Fig Newtons, and candied orange lead in, then vanilla, raspberry jam, caramel, and cinnamon. Raisin and a Milky Way sweetness show up on the palate. The finish is medium, with dark chocolate, coffee, a hint of tobacco, and a little dry oak.
