Blackwood Toasted Bourbon Whiskey
Blackwood Toasted Bourbon Whiskey is Kentucky straight bourbon aged 8 years, then given a second stay in new Kelvin oak. Blackwood moves each barrel, one for one, into one of three new Kelvin barrels: a medium toast with no char, a char 4 barrel with toasted heads, or a char 2 barrel with toasted heads. The new barrels are not filled to the brim, so the whiskey meets more of the caramelized sugar in the wood. Vanilla and a toasted sweetness land on the spice and fruit those first years already built. The house bill published for this toasted bourbon is 75 percent corn, 21 percent rye, and 4 percent malted barley. It is bottled at 105 proof.
Caramel, vanilla, and cinnamon keep returning, with orchard fruit and a toasted-marshmallow sweetness beside them. The Daily Pour also found orange, chocolate mint, almond, and a moderate, lightly hot body. The finish runs long: wood spice eases back into caramel, vanilla, and a last trace of char.
