The barley is grown on Islay, malted well past an ordinary peated whisky, and trickle-distilled in tall stills. It then spends a full term, typically 5 years, in ex-bourbon casks plus a wine-cask share that changes with the series, and these editions are bottled at cask strength. Bourbon oak brings vanilla and cereal sweetness, and the wine wood brings fruit, so the smoke has something to wrap around.

Peat smoke sits on a cereal sweetness and vanilla from the bourbon oak. The wine-cask fruit changes with the edition, raisin when the casks are oloroso and a sweeter wine note when they are not. Coastal salt stays in the glass, and the finish stays smoky.
