Compass Box Rogues’ Banquet Limited Edition Blended Scotch Whisky is James Saxon’s 20th-anniversary blend, bottled in February 2020 at 92 proof, 5,267 bottles. It is blended Scotch, malt plus grain: 68.7% Miltonduff from re-charred hogsheads, 25.6% North British grain from first-fill bourbon barrels, 3.5% Clynelish from refill hogsheads, and 2.2% Glen Elgin from re-charred barrels. Re-charred Miltonduff is why ginger, fudge, and dried cherry show; the bourbon-cask grain is why pastry cream and peach sit underneath. Natural colour, not chill-filtered.
Softened tropical fruit, stem ginger, and pastry cream open fragrant and full-bodied. Dark toffee, gingersnap, cinnamon, and lemon zest fill an unctuous middle, and vanilla cream and dark cookie close a long finish. The texture is luxurious rather than thin.
